The Growing Influence of AI on Gen Z
The future will depend not simply on how intelligent machines become, but on whether society remains committed to nurturing emotionally healthy, critically thoughtful, and socially connected human beings.
Generation Z, broadly defined as those born between 1997 and 2012, stands at the centre of the most significant technological transformation in human history.
Raised in an age of smartphones, social media, algorithms, and instant connectivity, this generation has never experienced a world untouched by digital technology. Yet the newest force shaping their lives is not social media alone, but Artificial Intelligence: A technology rapidly evolving from a passive tool into an active emotional and intellectual presence.
A generation raised in the most digitally connected era in human history is increasingly turning to machines for conversation, comfort, creativity, and even emotional reassurance. Artificial Intelligence, once imagined as a distant technological possibility, has rapidly become an intimate part of everyday life.
For many members of Gen Z, AI is no longer merely a tool used for convenience; it is slowly becoming a companion, a counsellor, a learning partner, and, for some, an emotional refuge. The relationship between young people and AI is evolving in ways far deeper than many adults realize.
This transformation cannot simply be explained by technological advancement. AI has become influential because it satisfies emotional and intellectual needs that many young people struggle to fulfil elsewhere. In a world shaped by academic pressure, social comparison, loneliness, and digital exhaustion, AI offers something dangerously attractive: Instant understanding without judgement.
It listens without interruption, responds without impatience, and remains available at all hours. For a generation burdened by uncertainty and emotional fatigue, such responsiveness can feel deeply human.
Gen Z is growing up in an era of contradictions. They are more connected online than any generation before them, yet many experience profound loneliness. The crisis of loneliness is no longer anecdotal; it is global.
According to the World Health Organization, nearly one in six people worldwide experiences loneliness, while approximately one in five teenagers aged 13 to 17 reports high levels of loneliness, a reality with serious consequences for mental health, emotional stability, and social well-being.
Social media promised connection but often intensified insecurity, comparison, and emotional isolation. Friendships increasingly compete with algorithms, and human interaction is frequently filtered through screens, reactions, and carefully curated identities. Within such an environment, AI enters not as an invader but as a solution.
It becomes easier for many young people to communicate with a system that never mocks them, rejects them, or misunderstands their emotions.
This emotional dimension of AI is perhaps the most significant and least discussed aspect of its growing influence. Many young people now use AI not only to complete tasks but also to seek advice, express frustration, discuss personal struggles, or simply escape silence.
What once seemed absurd: speaking emotionally to a machine, is gradually becoming normalized. The danger does not necessarily lie in these interactions themselves, but in the possibility that emotional dependence on artificial systems may gradually replace the difficult yet essential process of building genuine human relationships.
At the same time, AI is transforming intellectual habits. Students can now generate essays, summaries, presentations, explanations, and even research ideas within seconds. Tasks that once demanded patience, critical thinking, and sustained concentration are increasingly outsourced to algorithms.
AI undeniably offers enormous educational advantages. It can democratize access to knowledge, simplify difficult concepts, assist language learning, and support independent research. For students from disadvantaged educational backgrounds, such tools can become instruments of empowerment.
Meanwhile, recent Salesforce data reveals that nearly 70% of Gen Z already use AI tools, while more than half report trusting AI to help them make informed decisions. This growing trust highlights how deeply integrated AI has become in the daily decision-making processes of young people.
Yet trust without literacy is dangerous. Over-reliance on AI without critical evaluation risks creating dependency rather than understanding.
Convenience carries its own risks. Intellectual growth often emerges through struggle: through confusion, revision, curiosity, and persistence. When every difficulty is solved instantly, the habit of deep thinking can gradually weaken. Many young people may begin confusing access to information with understanding itself.
The ability to generate polished answers does not automatically cultivate wisdom, creativity, or analytical maturity. There is a growing danger that AI may produce a generation skilled in obtaining responses but less experienced in wrestling with ideas.
The influence of AI also raises deeper philosophical questions about identity and authenticity. If algorithms increasingly shape how young people write, communicate, study, and even process emotions, where does human individuality stand?
When AI can imitate empathy, generate art, compose music, and mimic conversation with astonishing realism, the line between authentic interaction and artificial simulation becomes increasingly blurred. For Gen Z, a generation already navigating uncertainty about identity and belonging, this blurring may reshape the meaning of human connection itself.
However, blaming technology alone would be intellectually dishonest. AI did not create the emotional vacuum into which it entered. It merely occupied it.
The growing attachment between Gen Z and AI reflects broader failures within modern society: Weakening communities, declining attention spans, emotionally unavailable social environments, competitive education systems, and the gradual erosion of meaningful human connection. Perhaps the real question is not why AI feels human, but why human relationships increasingly fail to do so.
This does not mean AI should be feared or rejected. Technological progress has always reshaped society, and AI possesses immense potential to improve education, healthcare, accessibility, and creativity. The challenge lies in ensuring that AI remains a tool that enhances human capability rather than replacing emotional resilience, intellectual discipline, and authentic relationships.
Young people must be taught not only how to use AI effectively, but also how to preserve the human qualities that technology cannot truly replicate: Empathy, moral judgement, unimagined creativity, patience, vulnerability, and genuine companionship.
At its best, AI can support human flourishing. At its worst, it can quietly deepen emotional dependency and intellectual passivity. The future will depend not simply on how intelligent machines become, but on whether society remains committed to nurturing emotionally healthy, critically thoughtful, and socially connected human beings.
A generation that turns to machines for understanding may not simply be addicted to technology. It may be searching for the humanity it struggles to find elsewhere.
