In rural Bangladesh, many villages are crisscrossed by canals dug during the era of Ziaur Rahman, the former president who personally participated in canal excavation programs nearly 48 years ago.

His hands-on involvement left a lasting impression on local communities. To this day, entire villages and unions in these areas remain strong supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which Ziaur Rahman founded.

The enduring loyalty stems from one key factor: Ziaur Rahman, despite being a military figure, connected deeply with the masses. He visited villages, engaged with ordinary people, and made genuine efforts to understand their struggles.

National Citizens Party (NCP) is taking steps in a similar direction. Leaders like Hasnat, Tasnim Jara, and others have been holding roadside meetings, visiting door-to-door, and engaging in conversations with the public.

Observers note that while these efforts are commendable, the NCP should have initiated such grassroots campaigns from the moment of its formation. Though late, the party’s move to connect with rural communities signals a shift toward meaningful politics.

Political analysts emphasize that true people’s politics cannot be confined to Dhaka’s elite circles. To resonate with the masses, leaders must travel to villages, listen to their joys and sorrows, and immerse themselves in their lives. Hosting iftar gatherings in five-star hotels may win favor with the elite, but it does not forge bonds with ordinary citizens.

The NCP’s leaders such as Nahid, Akhtar, Hasnat, and Tasnim Jara must prioritize blending with the people. Moving away from social media-driven politics, the NCP should focus on fieldwork and direct engagement, as this is the path to building genuine public support.
